CORRECTION

I just had a call from Mark Inglett who received the email below. He was not the one who called me. He insisted that he thought this matter was being handled and asked me to keep him informed. He suggested that the number indicated it came from Patrick Mahoney or the Westport Post Office.  I am a bit hard of hearing and the identification was rushed so I apologize for the mistake. I am sending a copy of this to Patrick Mahoney. When I called  the back the number 816 561 7381, I was told he had been at the Westport Post Office today but was no longer the manager.

I am keeping everyone informed through the website http://www.cres.org/po/.

Dear Ron --

I begin with an explanation of why it has taken so long to contact you when my complaint originated Oct 25 last year. I have tried all sorts of ways to get a response from the post office -- email, phone calls, letter, and -- finally a certified letter. This led to a phone call just now, Feb 23, from Mark Inglett (816 561 7381), I believe it was, in response to my letter Feb 4, remailed Feb 16 Certified.

As you'll see from the website http://www.cres.org/po/ I have tried to communicate faithfully from the very first day. I have also kept the neighborhood association informed.

My complaint, as you'll see in the correspondence, is that my house has been damaged by work done on the post office parking lot. I complained while the work was in progress. Today I am told for the first time that the post office has no responsibility for this and that your firm is responsible.

I would appreciate an investigation and disposition of my complaint.

Thank you.

Dear Mr Inglett--

You called me on January 13 to inquire about my complaint that my house had been damaged by work in the Westport Post Office parking lot. In that conversation, I provided you with the website that contains the correspondence regarding this matter. I also immediately honored your request to email the same to you with the name of the construction company.

I have received no response from you or anyone.

The Neighborhood Assn is meeting tomorrow morning. They are aware of my complaint. They will be interested in any report I give them about the responsiveness of the Post Office to handle my complaint, originally lodged the first day of the problem, Oct 25 last year.

I am sure you are busy with many things, but I hope you will be able to give me the attention you promised when we spoke on the phone. I am doing my best to be patient, but not to even have my complaint investigated after this much time is worrisome.

Dear Mr Inglett --

I am getting no follow-up response from Patrick Mahoney to my complaint that my house has been damaged by the construction in the Westport Branch Post Office parking lot. Perhaps he is on vacation or there is an email problem.

I spoke with him twice on the first day I discovered a problem. As you will see from the 10/25/2010 1:16 PM correspondence below (latest emails nearest top), he said he hoped to get someone from the construction company to consult with me the following day, but nothing happened except my house appears to be further damaged with the subsequent work.

Please assure me of your interest and your plan to investigate my claims.

As suggested in my emails to Patrick, I intend to inform the Heart of Westport Neighborhood Association of the difficulties I have had in getting attention to this matter when it meets this Saturday. It would reassure the neighbors and businesses involved to learn that you are acting on my complaint.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

After further observation, it seems that the CB 224E machine is the major cause of the intermittent shaking and vibration today.

 Dear Patrick --

Perhaps you are on vacation, but my house again was shaken this morning so far twice for about two seconds each time. I was surprised since I did not expect the blacktopping to approach the violence of the previous work. I'm not sure which machine caused it (the house is vibrating at this moment but not shaking), but it seemed that it was when the machine started up.

Friday and Monday no activity took place in the parking lot.

If I do not hear from you and someone from the construction company by the end of the day, I will contact your supervisor. In addition, our neighborhood association is scheduled to meet this Saturday.

 I want my house repaired.

Please respond to this email. Our neighborhood association meets next week and I would like to be able to report progress on my complaint. If I need to contact your supervisor, let me know.

It was nice yesterday not to have my house shake. I stayed home most of the day in hopes that the construction company would contact me, as you expressed in your email Monday.

This morning I had a chance to inspect my foundation from the inside. The wall adjacent to the Post Office parking lot is much worse than is evident above ground from the outside. Quite a few new cracks are evident.

I will not be available most of the rest of today, but please inform me on what you are doing.

 I want my house repaired.

I went down stairs just now and items in the kitchen were vibrating, also on my fireplace mantle.

I waited all afternoon to 7 pm for a contractor's call per your hopeful email to me 10/25/2010 1:16 PM. No call or contact has been made.

I inspected the exterior foundation and found two cracks that I believe are new. I had foundation repairs made within the last year, so I am pretty sure these cracks are new.

 FOR THE RECORD TUESDAY

The vibration of my house started again today at about 7:50. I'd guess the vibration is about 10 HZ. I've tried to figure out the physics of the thing. I suppose the downward pressure of the compacting exerts sideways pressure on the house foundation. It must not be as resilient as the Post Office building as yesterday I went to the edge of the Post Office building closest to the parking lot and felt no vibration.

 FOR THE RECORD

As the work continues this afternoon, including this very minute,. my entire house is vibrating. I feel it in my chair, my desk, on the banister, standing on the floors. It is not as bad as the few seconds of acute vibration this morning, but now the windows also are vibrating. I won't mention the unusual headache I have.

The last time the parking lot was torn up and repaved several years ago, I don't recall this much distress.

 Subject: house damage from construction?

 Dear Patrick --

This is to follow-up my report to you and to the construction foreman this morning that at one point when one of the construction machines was operating near my house, the house shook in vibration. I was alarmed and reported my concern to the equipment operator and he said he thought there should be no damage. I inspected my home's interior and found what appear to be new cracks in the plaster. I cannot swear they are new, but I do not recall seeing them before. The house, I'm told is over a hundred years old, so some cracks and settling is normal. But the ceiling in my study is relatively new plaster, and there is a crack now I have not noticed before. On the rug underneath I found two fragments of what seem to be plaster. Cracks in the upstairs bath appear to have enlarged. Perhaps there are expert ways of determining whether what I am seeing now is actually new, caused by the house shaking this morning.

Thank you for assuring me that my concern will be addressed, either by the Post Office or by the construction firm or its insurance company.

 Sincerely,

 Vern Barnet
